Copa® Cyclone – Non-power self cleaning Stormwater and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Screen T
The Copa® Cyclone is a non-powered, self cleaning storm over flow screen, which has been developed in partnership with United Utilities.
- No Power requirement
- Self cleansing
- 6mm aperture screening
- zero pin holing maintenance free
- self regulating
- all Stainless Steel Construction
Applications
Cyclone applications include storm tank discharges, emergency overflows on pumping stations, storm weirs on a sewage treatment works and overflows within the sewerage system. The screen is ideal for both retro-fit and new Storm overflow chambers.
Flow range
Two units are available:
Multiples of units can easily be installed into new stormwater diversion chambers, or retrofitted into existing chambers, if suitable.
Operational Principles
The Cyclone’s unique and novel design has eliminated the need for mechanical cleansing of the screens surface area along with the requirement for an external power supply. Extensive trials have shown that screenings roll from the rotating face of the drum on up-stream and down-stream water levels (as indicated in the animation) maintaining a clean surface area. Our original experimental unit has been trialed at the National CSO test Facility at Wigan . The screen was run continuously for 5 hours with no blinding and achieved a maximum SRV of 40 %.
Operation
With even the smallest inflow the drum will start to rotate. Since there is a high shear action between the drum face and the surrounding water, any screenings attached to the outside of the drum, will be stripped from the aperture face. With increased flow the water level over the weir shall rise utilising a greater inflow screen area and therefore increasing the screen throughput. As more flow enters, the drum rotates faster and hence increases the shear action, which in turn improves the cleansing action. The unit is therefore self regulating over the full range of flows. Should the unit become completely submerged the drum will continue to operate with the maximum inflow area being utilised.
Maintenance
The normal maintenance regime is to inspect the drum annually to ensure that it is clean and rotating freely. The shaft bearings are stainless steel and are sealed for life and require no further maintenance.
