The Caird & Rayner Clark Sand Bed Filter is designed to remove suspended mailer from the water thus giving a dear and attractive water supply (removal of solids down to 80 micron). The water enters at the top of the filter during the normal working cycle and passes down through a fine uniform grade sand bed where suspended matter is removed. The completely sand tight nozzles secured in the base of the filter ensure maximum collection area for the filtered water with minimum loss of head. To remove the suspended matter trapped in the sand bed during the filtering cyde, the flow of water is simply reversed. This backwash action causes the sand bed to expand and the accumulated impurities collected during the filtering cycle are released and carried to waste. As the bed is uniform it is not necessary to remove it for re-grading, but it should be topped up once a year to replace any sand lost during backwashing.
