The Caird & Rayner Clark hypochlorinators are designed to fulfill the sterilisation requirements for both small and large quantities of water and have a treatment range from zero up to 500,000 litre/hr. They are completely automatic in operation and deliver a quantity of solution directly proportional to the flow of water to be treated. The unit consists of an outer container enclosing an internal collapsible container in which the chemical charge is held. The space between the containers is connected to the upstream side of an orifice plate fitted in the pipe line conveying the water to be treated. The internal container is connected to the downstream side of the orifice. Differential Pressure Control. The orifice plate fitted in the pipe line, through which the water to be treated passes, operates the unit. Immediately a flow exists the differential in pressure between the up stream and down stream side of the orifice causes the water to pass into the space between the containers, collapsing the inner container to displace an equal volume of chemical which is delivered to the water main at the down stream connection. Based on the well-known principle of the venturi tube as used for metering purposes, the rate of displacement is in direct proportion to the flow of water passing, thus any variation in the flow results in a proportional variation in the treatment. Treatment Plant Simple control of the treatment is obtained by a sensitive needle valve fitted in the water supply line to the flow meter which gives an exact measure of the water passing, this being equal to the chemical solution being replaced. Capacity The treatment capacity of the hypo chlorinators depends on the solubility of the reagent employed and for this reason capacities are stated in litres of solution. The strength of the solution can be varied up to saturation point, thus a wide range of flow can be covered by the three sizes of unit, namely 18, 55 and 105 litres capacity.
