Enviroquip SymBio® Select process for biological nitrogen removal for the wastewater treatment industry. Designed for both domestic sewage and industrial applications, the SymBio® Select process is based on the proprietary SymBio® process for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in a single reactor using NADH fluorescence monitoring. Developed through extensive research and field experience, the SymBio® Select process extends the benefits offered by the original SymBio® process by incorporating selector technology as shown.
The SymBio® Select process provides the following advantages to wastewater treatment plant operators:
- Three zones create F:M gradient to favor biological selection of floc-forming bacteria over filamentous microorganisms – better sludge settling characteristics.
- Pre-anoxic, SymBio® and Oxic zones with approximate volume ratios of 10:80:10
- ensures that the maximum volume operates at low DO (< 1.0 mg/l) under SymBio® mode for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification combined with significant energy savings compared to conventional treatment methods.
- Low mixed liquor recycle rate, usually less than 100% - further reduces the energy consumption.
- Total effluent nitrogen below 5.0 mg/l.
- Final oxic zone reduces ammonia below 1.0 mg/l and introduces positive DO in water before discharge into secondary clarifiers – avoids septic situations.
- Flexibility of bypassing pre-anoxic zone or converting it into anaerobic stage for biological phosphorous removal.
- Pre-anoxic and the SymBio® zones usually monitored with on-line NADH sensors for automatic operation – provides real-time information on biomass health, influent toxicity and the system’s oxygen demand.
