The Carrousel® A2C™ Process (for Anaerobic, Anoxic, Carrousel®) is a three-stage activated sludge process designed to provide effective removal of phosphorus and thorough reductions of BOD, TSS, ammonia nitrogen, and nitrate/nitrite nitrogen. By combining the hydraulic efficiency and flexible aeration of the Carrousel System with dedicated volumes for anaerobic and anoxic reactions, the Carrousel A2C System delivers reliable treatment performance over a wide range of hydraulic and process loadings, in a simple, energy-efficient process that is remarkably easy to operate and maintain. Flexible, efficient aeration is a fundamental requirement to reliably achieve BPR At the heart of each A2C System is the Carrousel® System featuring an aeration system so efficient in oxygen transfer and mixing that aeration power input can typically be reduced by 75-85% without loss of mixing. The ability to match power input with process oxygen demands over a wide range of loading conditions ensures optimal conditions are maintained for biological phosphorus and nitrogen removal. Denitrification lays the foundation – the Carrousel® denitIR® System Because high-efficiency biological phosphorus removal is impossible in the presence of nitrate, the Carrousel A2C System incorporates the most effective denitrification technology available – the Carrousel® denitIR® System. This innovative design links the Carrousel aeration basin and the anoxic reactor through a bypass channel and allows the continuous recycle of nitrified mixed liquor to the anoxic reactor and denitrified mixed liquor to the Carrousel aeration basin. This arrangement eliminates the capital and operating costs of recycle pumps and allows for essentially free recycle flows of up to 10 to 15 times the influent flow, sufficient to achieve extraordinarily high levels of nitrate reduction.
