Chlorine dioxide is a very flexible chemical able of both efficient kappa reduction and of increasing the brightness. When turning from chlorine bleaching to ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free), an initial chlorine dioxide stage (a D0 stage) is often the first stage of bleaching.
